Firearms ID Card/Permit Applications

Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS)

New and repeat firearm applications are being directed to logon to the following website: https://www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars to apply for an initial Firearms Identification Card (FID), amend their current FID Card or to apply for a Permit to Purchase a Handgun. Applicants must utilize the Sparta Township Police Department’s ORI Code NJ0191800 when logging onto the FARS system.

Upon submitting on the FARS site please print out your application AND confirmation page that was emailed to you and bring to the police department with a CHECK, CASH, OR MONEY ORDER for payment reflected on your application.  Checks and Money Orders shall be made out to Sparta Township Police Department. Your application will not be processed until we have received payment and confirmation page.  A non-refundable payment is required to be made prior to the completion of the background as per NJAC 13:54-1.4.

The fee schedule is as follows:

• Initial NJ Firearm ID (FID) Card $50.00
• NJ Permits to Purchase a Handgun - $25.00 per permit.
• Replacement NJ Firearm (FID) Card Replacements – no charge
• Permit to Carry (PTC) - $150.00
