Police Department

As Sparta Police moves forward and tries to simplify our goals in the future in what sometimes can be as I said, a very complex job, we are committed to doing the following three things:

  1. We will continue to be vigilant and proactive in locking up people who break the law, especially those people who victimize others.
  2. We will show compassion and empathy to individuals who are in need and have called us for help or assistance and will either provide this assistance or get them the help they need.
  3. We will continue to strive for new ways to improve how we can better serve the needs of this great community.

OWN IT? RESPECT IT. SECURE IT.

The Sparta Township Police Department has partnered with Project Child Safe, which is funded by the United States Department of Justice, to distribute free gun locks to prevent gun violence.

Each kit includes safety information as well as a cable-style gun lock. The lock is designed to fit most handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

The goal of the initiative is to keep a child or other unauthorized person from gaining access to a firearm in your home.

Gun locks are available at the Sparta Township Police Department located at 65 Main Street, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Remember to Clean Your Medicine Cabinet

The effort to stop the abuse and diversion of prescription drugs begins at home and must include the opportunity for Sparta residents to dispose of their unused medications safely and securely at any time throughout the year.

The Sparta Police Department has placed a secured drop box in the lobby of the Police Departments. Residents can visit the box seven days a week, to drop off unneeded and expired medications and keep them away from those at risk of abusing them.

The drop boxes accept solid pharmaceuticals such as pills, capsules, patches, inhalers, and pet medications. They cannot accept syringes or liquids.

The Sparta Township Special Needs Registry is a voluntary service open to all citizens who reside in Sparta Township. The registry was created to help police officers, and other emergency personnel, better assist residents with special needs in the event of an emergency by providing those first responders with vital information regarding a registrant's disability, contact information, and physical description.

Blue Envelope Program

BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM

Caregivers know better than anyone, the struggles that are faced by those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is sometimes difficult to communicate properly with those who have ASD. The “Blue Envelope” was created to help those with ASD, as well as Police Officers, in the event of a motor vehicle stop.

The primary goal is to aid those drivers with document organization and to educate them about what to do during a motor vehicle stop. Please review the Blue Envelope and the Emergency Contact Form with those under your care and create a plan customized to their needs. The Sparta Township Police Department is available to help assist with the plan. The Blue Envelope also helps the Police Officer by identifying those with ASD and guides them on how to better interact with them. Police Officers currently receive training on how to recognize those with ASD, the Blue Envelope with buttress that training.

Inside the Blue Envelope you should place a color photocopy of the individual's driver’s license, vehicle registration card and insurance card. The Emergency Contact Form is located on the letter you will receive with the Blue Envelope. Please list several emergency contacts to ensure that someone is reachable. Be sure to place a Blue Envelope in each vehicle that is operated by the person with ASD.

To help is better interact with the person with ASD, please review these steps with them:

  • Keep your hands on the steering wheel until otherwise directed, even if the officer is not at your car.
  • Remember, the officer may shine a flashlight in your car, may have a radio, and may have flashing lights on their car.
  • When the officer gets to your car, say: “I have a Blue Envelope”
  • Answer the officer’s questions and ask the officer before moving any part of your body.
  • When the officer tells you, slowly get the Blue Envelope that has your driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance card and hand the Blue Envelope to the officer.
  • The officer will go back to their car to check your information, and you will need to wait for the officer until they come back.
  • When the officer comes back to your car, they will explain why you were stopped and will tell you when to leave.

Blue Envelopes are available to be picked up at the Sparta Township Police Department, located at 65 Main Street, Sparta, NJ.
